Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

A tummy tuck is a procedure designed to comprehensively improve the mid-body contour by tightening loose skin and musculature in the abdomen. Often referred to as ‘abdominoplasty,’ tummy tuck surgery can produce a powerful transformation by bringing together separated abdominal muscles as well as removing and redraping excess skin. These are goals that can be especially beneficial for patients who have a hanging or protruding abdomen due to pregnancy or massive weight loss. Liposuction can optionally be performed in tandem with a tummy tuck to reduce pockets of stubborn fat and further define the abdominal profile. All of these techniques from Dr Vaneshri Chetty-B, our extensively experienced plastic surgeon, can help you gain a firmer, slimmer, and smoother look in the abdomen. Starts from R 85 000.00 – R 125 000.00 – This price would include the hospital, anesthetist and the surgeon fee, excluding VAT.

Who is a Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

Whether formed as a result of aging, genetics, weight loss, or pregnancy, a sagging abdomen can cause insecurity for many men and women who wish to feel more confident about their body contour. Tummy tuck surgery can be a highly effective solution to treat loose skin and lax abdominal muscles, which often do not improve with dieting and exercise. Those considering a tummy tuck should ideally:

While a tummy tuck procedure should not interfere with future pregnancy or breastfeeding, it is highly recommended that patients complete their family before pursuing abdominoplasty. Having a child after the procedure can re-stretch the abdominal muscles and skin, potentially recreating the aesthetic concerns originally addressed with surgery and diminishing the quality of the outcome. Dr Chetty-B would be happy to speak to you about your goals for the procedure and suggest the best possible treatment options to obtain your desired look.

How is Tummy Tuck Surgery Performed?

After evaluating your areas of concern in a consultation, Dr Chetty-B will develop a surgical plan tailored to your needs and goals. Abdominoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis utilising general anesthesia. During the procedure, Dr Chetty-B will make an incision below the navel from hip bone to hip bone. The scarring from this incision should be easily concealed beneath underwear or a bikini bottom, allowing discreet and natural-looking results. She will then bring separated musculature back to its original positioning and remove excess skin while redraping the remainder over the abdomen. This should result in a tighter, smoother look as well as a slimmer abdominal contour. Incisions are closed and patients are typically discharged after a period of observation to recover from the comfort of their own homes, although some individuals may require an overnight stay depending on the complexity of the procedure.

What Can I Expect From the Tummy Tuck Recovery Period?

After tummy tuck surgery, patients should get plenty of rest while their body heals. Standing, walking around the house, and other types of light ambulation are encouraged to prevent blood clots. Swelling, tenderness, soreness, and/or bruising are natural reactions to surgery and should subside as recovery progresses. Oral pain medications and ice packs can be used as necessary to reduce discomfort during the healing process. In most cases, patients can return to work and their daily routines after two weeks, although laborious activity and exercise should be avoided for at least one month.
