Liposuction, or simply ‘lipo’, is a highly requested cosmetic procedure among a diverse range of patients. Indeed, even strenuous dieting and excruciating exercise are often not enough to get rid of unflattering bulges, such as ‘love handles,’ ‘muffin tops,’ or ‘bra rolls.’ Liposuction techniques target these concerns precisely to contour fat and achieve better-looking curves—especially when complemented with skin tightening techniques. Liposuction can be applied to the face and neck, upper arms, breasts (including male breasts in cases of gynecomastia), back, abdomen, flanks, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, ankles, or calves. These areas often naturally store fat due to your genes, and are therefore unaffected by exercise regimens.
Dr Vaneshri Chetty-B, our highly skilled plastic surgeon, can develop a liposuction treatment plan tailored to make your desired body contours a reality. Please contact our Johannesburg office to discuss your goals with Dr Chetty-B in a consultation.
Who is a Candidate for Liposuction?
Liposuction can be an excellent treatment choice for any patient who wishes to reduce excess fat around the body. Our team has experience eliminating fat cells, firming lax skin, and providing optimal skincare solutions to achieve long-lasting results. Good candidates for liposuction are generally:
- At or near their ideal weight
- Healthy enough to undergo surgery
- Interested in long-lasting fat reduction
- Able to maintain realistic expectations for the outcome
Those who achieve the best quality of results also usually have good skin elasticity, meaning they have little to no loose skin in the area(s) of treatment. That said, Dr Chetty-B can suggest skin tightening procedures to combine with liposuction surgery according to your needs, such as an arm lift, thigh lift, body lift, or tummy tuck. Liposuction can be very effective in reducing localised fat deposits, but it’s important to remember that this technique is not intended for weight loss.
How is the Liposuction Procedure Performed?
Liposuction is designed to suction out excess fat cells using a long, narrow tube called a ‘cannula.’ Fortunately, evolving liposuction techniques have made it possible to extract redundant fat with less swelling and discomfort than ever before. Dr Chetty-B will discuss the best techniques for your unique needs during your consultation.
During the procedure, Dr Chetty-B uses suction-assisted liposuction to break down excess fat cells. This involves inserting a cannula through tiny incisions and moving it in a back-and-forth motion to detach the localized fat. Once broken up, the fat is then extracted subdermally using a high-powered vacuum. Our advanced liposuction options are geared to complement both women and men.
What is Recovery From Liposuction Like?
Mild swelling and bruising after the procedure may occur, but are often well-tolerated with over-the-counter pain medication. Most patients can return to work within four to seven days depending on your unique rate of healing. Plenty of rest is essential during recovery, but we also encourage light ambulation as soon as you feel comfortable doing so. Exercise and strenuous activity should be avoided for at least four weeks.
Dr Chetty-B and our team can integrate advanced liposuction procedures into your treatment plan to produce smooth, glowing results within the context of your goals. Please contact The Forever Institute today to speak to a member of our team, or to book a consultation.
