Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)
If you desire a fuller, rounder, or more shapely buttock contour, a Brazilian Butt Lift may be the perfect procedure to attain the curves you’ve been yearning for. A Brazilian Butt Lift, commonly shortened to ‘BBL,’ is an augmentation technique designed to transfer excess fat into the gluteal region in order to produce a more voluptuous figure in the lower body. This approach to buttock enhancement can improve the volume, size, shape, symmetry, and/or contour of the buttocks using your own tissue, often achieving longer-lasting results when compared to augmentation via dermal fillers. Dr Vaneshri Chetty-B, our plastic surgeon based in Johannesburg, can combine liposuction and fat transfer techniques to balance your body proportions and bring your ideal buttock contour to fruition.
Who is a Candidate for a Brazilian Butt Lift?
Good candidates for a Brazilian Butt Lift include patients who seek to improve the volume, shape, and/or symmetry of their buttocks and prefer not to receive implants. Patients should also:
- Have a positive outlook and realistic expectations regarding what a BBL can accomplish
- Be relatively healthy enough to undergo surgery
- Have no uncontrolled medical conditions that may inhibit the healing process
- Be committed to a healthy, active lifestyle
In addition to enhancing the fullness of the buttocks, gluteal fat grafting can also provide a slight lifting effect while also smoothing out any contour irregularities. During a consultation, Dr Chetty-B will listen to your goals, review your medical history, and evaluate your concerns to help you determine whether a Brazilian Butt Lift can benefit you.
How is Brazilian Butt Lift Surgery Performed?
A Brazilian Butt Lift is generally performed in two stages: the harvesting of excess fat through liposuction, followed by the injection of transferred fat into the buttocks. Both parts of the procedure are performed during the same outpatient surgery while patients are under general anesthesia.
Dr Chetty-B will first extract redundant fat through tiny incisions made either in the abdomen or the thighs, which are usually fat-rich regions of the body. This often provides dual contouring benefits for patients, as the region(s) where fat is harvested can also be reshaped at the same time as your buttock augmentation. She will use a narrow cannula to suction out excess fat cells, and subsequently process the extracted fat before injection. Dr Chetty-B will then perform gluteal fat transfer by meticulously delivering the purified fat into the buttocks with a syringe, making sure to shape the buttocks according to your aesthetic goals. The results can be immediately noticeable after surgery, but it generally takes up to one year for the final outcome to reveal itself.
What is Recovery From a Brazilian Butt Lift Like?
After the Brazilian Butt Lift procedure, Dr Chetty-B and our team will provide detailed aftercare instructions to help ensure an optimal healing process. Bandages may be placed on the buttocks to help reduce swelling and facilitate your new body contour. You will also be instructed to avoid sitting for prolonged periods of time to reduce pressure on the buttocks and to avoid damaging the fat grafts. We encourage you to sleep on your side or face down in order to strengthen the chances of survival for the transferred fat cells.
Swelling and bruising are typically described as mild and can be controlled with ice packs and oral pain medication. Most patients can return to non-strenuous work within one to two weeks. Dr Chetty-B will monitor your progress in your post-operative follow-up appointments, and advise you to avoid exercise for at least six to eight weeks.
